Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (1913)

22 young women desiring to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to those in need founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University. Delta Sigma Theta is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide services and programs to advance the well being of humankind. A sisterhood of more than 190,000 predominately Black college educated women, the sorority currently has over 900 chapters located in 45 states of the United States, as well as chapters in England, Panama Canal, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, Republic of Korea, and the Bahamas.
